Kraft foods makes cracker barrel cheeses and crackers. I do not think that the name has any racial meaning.

Word. I don't shop at WalMart. However, I don't consider myself a revolutionary, not do I expect to see the walls of the stores cast asunder due to my lack of spending there. I just don't like their business practices.

No. It's southern. North of Dixieland, it's Soul Food to some.
Personally, I've not had good dining experiences at Cracker Barrel. Either the food was cold, didn't taste good, or the service has sucked. Hence, I don't go there any more.

Cracker Barrel to offer urban alternative
Quote:
Cracker Barrel, the famously old country store based in Lebanon, Tennessee, announced they will be shifting their focus away from the tried and true standard to develop a more modern, hip, urban alternative.
Cracker Barrels are known to maintain hour-long waits even when there are two restaurants placed at the same exit off the interstate, each next to a Waffle House. Cracker Barrels are a smashing success wherever they are established. In addition to country cooking, they offer merchandise for sale in their “Old Country Store,” such as country knick-knacks, Christmas ornaments, candies, and apparel. Sale of this merchandise is very lucrative.
Urban planners have long desired to have some sort of draw to blighted downtown areas, and an urbanized Cracker Barrel might just be the answer, according to Gemini Kriquet, an urban planner known for organizing urban environments to a plan. “A Cracker Barrel, in its chic, modern form, might just get those travelers off the interstate and into urban areas they might normally not visit. And in a way that aquariums and halls of fame don’t,” she explained.
Cracker Barrel, known to have a double meaning as to what’s inside, will change the name for its urban iteration. The new restaurants will be called Le Petard Baril. Instead of country fare, the stores will be designed by Philippe Starck to display an ultra modern, ultra hip decor.
The country store concept will remain, with the giftshop selling decorative deadbolts, window bars, and topiaries. Additionally, the store will carry a full line of bon-bons, Evian waters, and perrier.
The menu will be updated with most items translated to French and served with less gravy and fewer grits. Vegetables will be served steamed, with sourdough loaves instead of biscuits or cornbread. Very few meats will be fried, and tofu will be added as a meat alternative in most cases.
Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville are all slated to be test markets. However, the new restaurant concept is still in the early design phases. The corporation hopes to have one open by fall of next year.

I'm pretty picky about my clothes. Not who makes them, but where they are made. I won't buy anything unless it's tag lists it as Made In Canada, USA, or China (I'd rather not buy from China, but it's so damn prevalent and not nearly as third-world as Bangladesh or Myanmar). It's not as if my own purchases have any effect on whether other companies use child labour and other fun practices.

First Post - History of Enword Banners

LoL. It's cool man. I feel your pain. I'll keep sending you free pdf books until I hear those three magic words that I loved to hear during my dating years -- "I Give Up."
In any case, I thought I'd go ahead and make my first post on these forums, and I'm very happy to tell you that I keep track of all my banners.
A little history lesson here -- in the Enworld days, here were the banners that royally upset people:
This did indeed cause an uproar at Enworld. People were particularly upset by the last two banners for some strange reason. Some of my favorite comments from other posters:
1) "What does women have to do with the product"
2) "I'm insulted that they think sexy pictures will help sell products to gamers!"
2) " If they have to advertise like this, the product must suck".
I really didn't respond much to the negative posts, which got a lot of attention, and was spearheaded by a woman from Green Ronin and another well known self publisher. Honestly, my answers to their comments should have been:
1) "Women have nothing to do with the product, but it sure did catch your eye"
2) "It helps a little, but all of your complaining about it helps a lot more"
3) "The advertisements have nothing to do with my products sucking. My products suck for a completely different reason."
Yes, that is what I should have said. But instead, I took the high moral ground and conceded to their demands. I took down those "sexist" banners and replaced them with these the next day:
I am happy to say that the replacement banners received absolutely no negative comments. As a matte of fact, the bo-staff banner got an surprising number of positive comments.

Those comments coming, incidentally, about two months after Paizo Publishing put a half-naked chick on front of Dragon. Why Seattle-based Green Ronin did not direct criticism to a company down the street with employees that they were on a first-name basis with as opposed to Le is a complete and total mystery. Pazio sells tens of thousands of products a month, while Le uses the internet connection from his local library and even then he has to beat up ten-year-old kids for their library cards to even do that much.

Oh yeah, I remember a few people got upset by the one of the chick holding a finger to her lips. Saying it implied oral sex.

I sincerely hope that these people never watch an NFL game, because things like cheerleaders and beer commercials featuring hot girls would probably cause them to collapse from sheer horror.

Yeah, the lady from Green Ronin seemed to be the most vocal opponent of the ads. But a couple of folks who worked for another well-known self publisher also raised a stink over the ads. I won't buy anything from their company either.

You're far more diplomatic than I am. I wanted to say "Shit, lady. Just because you're not hot enough to be in those ads doesn't mean you have to ruin everybody else's enjoyment." But doing so probably would have resulted in me being banned from EN World.

Personally, I would have kept the ads going just to show that I won't be pushed around by a bunch of humorless prudes. But I do have to admit that the half-naked men was a very clever way of sticking it to your opponents.

I have a correction. The person who started the whole thing was "Nicole Lindross". I thought she was part of Green Ronin, but now I am unsure if she has a connection to them at all. I apologize for the mistake.
She blogged about it at:

I find the sample image she posts interesting -- the image she has no problems with. From what I understand, she is fine with a sexist picture as long as the setting itself is sexist, right?

I've gotta say - I participated in the TheLe debacle. However, my main complaint was that they didn't seem very "grandma friendly." I also didn't think the ads with the men were very "grandma friendly."
I don't really give a crap because they weren't overly offensive to me. I was just concerned that they didn't "mesh" with the rules at ENW. But, I'm not the decider at ENW. So - whatevs.
TheLe - you've got an awesome sense of humor.

I definitely remember that somebody from Green Ronin (or at least somebody who contributed to Mutants & Masterminds) was one of the most vocal of the prudes. They bragged about working on Mutants & Mastermind in their signature.

If she's offended by T&A then she picked the wrong industry to work in. T&A advertising, cheesecake, and booth babes have been a part of the role-playing industry since the beginning. And since the vast majority of gamers are males who like to look at half-naked women, I don't see those things going away anytime soon.

I note that none of the above is a denial that Le beats up 10-year-old kids to get their library cards for internet access.

Yes, Nicole Lindroos is from Green Ronin. She obviously doesn't enjoy the same visuals that I do, but I have no problem with her.
She can be pretty vocal at times, but she shares my opinion of Nisarg, so it's a wash. I frequent the True20 boards and she's been helpful. I like her.
Of course, it probably comes as no surprise that I am understanding of both sides of the argument, so hold neither opinion negatively.
I'll be straddling my fence if you need me.

Nicole is part of GR, she's married to Chris Pramas, and they are the heads of the company.
I stayed out of the debate, but enjoyed watching it play out. I like Nicole, think she's usually pretty level headed, and I enjoy talking with her at GenCon every year. But, IMHO, she was in the wrong and The was in the right on this issue.

First - welcome to The Le! Really glad to see you posting on CM.
Second I must be the only one who thought there was nothing sexual about the old banner ads. They had a pretty girl on them without anything showing from the next down (except for one that I don't remember seeing until this thread). I felt the original thread was bizarre (and Nikchick even more bizarre) as there wasn't anything offensive about the ads beyond them having a head shot of a pretty girl. Nice to see Nikchick's hypocripsy shining through as she never made any kind of stick about the much more revealing male model ads. What a stupid bitch.

Well, and there's some weird, Twilight Zone-esque disconnect in objecting to cheesecake when you write for a superhero-roleplaying genre. Comic book protaganists have been running around in skin-tight spandex and cleavage-hugging Wonder Bras for even longer than there's been a bikini-chainmail-and-buff-barbarian meme in RPGs!
