Still going to make one. Or shit, just use one I have. Actually - will a 10th level Hound Archon fit in? If not I understand, she comes from an unusual campaign. But I dig her, and well, the sheet's around here somewhere...
[edit: nevermind, re-read the original thread. I will get to this in the next couple of days.]

Description: Excessively broad, but muscular physique. Massive arms and legs. Slightly bestial features in the face. Oversized hands and feet, long arms and torso, with somewhat shorter legs than normal for his height. Blond hair, blue eyes. Intricate knot style tattoos wrapped around his forearms. 5 ft. 10 inches, 275 lbs., 25 years old.
Personality: Tends to feel guilty due to a slightly criminal past (trespass, petty larceny, vandalism). Intelligent and curious, but insecure due to his overly bestial appearance.
Background A former petty thief and cat burglar (street urchin a la the Artful Dodger in Oliver Twist) forced into government service, Gripir has since come around to seeing things from the other point of view. He found that his skills made him an excellent fit for the Chief Judge's special ministry, and he sees this job as an opportunity to redeem himself in the eyes of the law. He tends not to talk about his past much, although this is more due to embarrassment than anything else. His formerly criminal proclivities are well-known among his peers. He's also hoping that he might have a chance to see his family again, who he hasn't seen since before he ran away as a lad. He knows that they know about his old haunts and habits, and he's hoping that any future encounters with them will be improved by his current standing, although given that his family's none too fond of the Chief Judge's rule, he may not be in any better straits.

Gp standard for your character level. I don't have my books handy, so I won't be able to look that up for a while--I'm sure that by the time I could tell you, someone will swoop in and tell us what standard GP for a 3rd level build should be. Please?
Anyway, two characters so far, so I obviously won't be starting today, I don't think. Be sure and give me some backstory and description of your character--even if you just PM it to me, too.

I don't mind posting it here, but that won't work, naturally, if there's something in your backstory that is secret. I'm not hard to please either way about it, though.

Well, I haven't had time this past weekend to give it a lot of thought, but I generally think that an evil character stuck amongst pc's of other alignments will have at least one secret. So send me an email. I'll also post my character's description here for the other people to get acquainted with her.

So, I, uh ... yeah. I broke my promise. I suck.
I'll let you know the concept now so you'll have something, even though I don't have the nitty-gritty nailed down yet. I'll be playing a LG halfling monk.
Beware my kung fu.

OK, here's some generic background for all of your characters.
You are in the city-state of Trezence. Once, it was a vast empire, ruled by an immortal god-king who was called simply The Tyrant. The elves of neighboring Iqualla were unhappy with The Tyrant, though, and made war against him. By simultaneously fomenting revolt of his people and encouraging the wide-ranging tundra nomadic tribes to the North to attack, The Tyrant was deposed and slain. Today, Trezence is a large urban center, with several wider ranging towns, villages and farms. It's area of direct control is much, much smaller than it used to be; probably 30 miles north to south, and no more than 50-60 miles east to west. It's influence is recognized over an area probably twice that size around it as well, but the other urban centers of The Tyrant's empire are now independent.
The Tyrant lived up to his name, according to the old tales, and treated his subjects no differently than he treated his herds of cattle, or horses. He embarked at one point on a program to breed specialists for certain tasks, and the lingering effects of program are all of the various x-touched races in the area (genasi and other planetouched, shifters, changelings, etc.). Trezence is primarily a human city, but in the recent decades since The Tyrants overthrow (some one hundred and seventy years ago) it has become more cosmopolitan as dwarves, elves, halflings, etc. have moved in to take advantage of suddenly newly freed markets.
The climate of Trezence is fairly cold--it is located in a heavily forested area of taiga, and is bounded to the north and east by tundra, to the west by mountains, to the south by broadleaf forests and steppes. Winter is long and cold, and summer is relatively short. In the last few decades, this has become even more marked; winter has lingered long and been more harsh, and the arctic treeline has crept steadily southwards towards Trezence. At the same time, a number of bizarre and unexplainable things have happened that seem to represent a threat to the populace; an increase in savage creatures, the appearance of curses, and more. These have all led to considerable unrest in recent years.
Since The Tyrants downfall, no one wanted to be seen as stepping into the same role, so Trezence has no king--it is instead ruled relatively lightly (in theory) by a system of judges. The Chief Judge is the main authority, and it is an elected position, although the term of office is "life" or until he voluntarily steppes down, and children of former Chief Judges have had marked success in bidding for office. The current Chief Judge is Lazarius Cansales Omnotsky. He is now fairly old and has served for almost twenty five years. During his term--and that of his predecessor--the Chief Judge has taken a much more active role in ruling Trecenze, approaching the authority of a sovereign monarch. Martial law has been declared many times, and standing armies and heavily stocked police forces roam the streets and woodland pathways of Trecenze proper, and their authority is widely recognized beyond it as well. The combination of environmental hardships and a step-up of governmental power has led to a growing movement among the populace (who are too shortlived to remember it anyway) to look back with rose-colored glasses on The Tyrant's reign as a time of Trecenze's greatest power, prestige and whatnot.
Into all of this come the PCs--part of a Ministry created by Chief Judge to deal with the growing complaints of strange supernatural occurances. The department is not that old; some of the original officers who served when it was formed are still with the department, if they've survived. Disturbingly, they are not pleasant people--some of them are arguably insane, or at least paranoid and psychotic.

Sweet. Looking forward to this!
Incidentally, if you have need of another replacement person, Grith Jizzbag (please pardon his s/n) is my fiance and GM/player of 20+ years. He'd love to join in if you need more folks, and he can have a character and backstory in less than an hour, on a good day.

Okay, so I'm in (well, I got drafted, but I didn't put up much of a fuss ).
The brief back story sounds interesting to say the very least. So, we have three monks and a fighter. Hmmm. Logic would dictate that we would need someone with healing arts, such as a cleric of some sort. Now, I'm no Vulcan, so I say to hell with logic.
Here's the character concept I have. A half-ogre fighter, by name of Tagar. Big guy with an even bigger heart. He'll be anyone's friend... until he sees his new friend do something mean to someone who didn't deserve it. At that point he will pummel his old new friend until he stops moving and say to him, "That not nice. You not Tagar's friend no more."
I can have a character sheet and history up and ready within the next few hours if that meets with your approval. To make things even more interesting, I can give him ranks in Heal. ("Come here, little monky-person. Tagar fix your legs what got broke. Don't cry! It not hurt that bad!")
(Oh, and yeah... sorry for the screen name... I stole it from a game called "Hol" and I thought that this was going to be a freezone of wackiness. Apparently, wackiness does not include poor taste... )

Actually, there is a cleric in the making, so if that's the only reason you're looking at Heal, then you don't need to. If you want to do it anyway 'coz you think it's fun, then that's fine.
I don't mind your screen name. If it bothers you, though, you could probably PM an admin and they'd change it in a jiffy for you.
And not to change the subject too much, but uh, Wyn? Care to explain the story behind your shiny new title there?

The screen name doesn't bother me at all... I merely apologized out of concern for those who might me bothered by it. If there's enough of a ruckus, I'll petition to change it, but then there is a moderator here named "Fucktardo", so I don't think that anyone will be fussing too much over the name.
And, if there is a cleric coming, I will be spending my precious few skill points on things of more practical use... like scaring the bejesus out of people!
Anyway, a couple of quick questions:
I once played in a PBeM game, and it took us about two months to get to the employer's home and then out into the city, at which point the game died. How is PBP different?
Will the GM be the one doing all of the die rolling, and will we be able to know what numbers are rolled?
Will we have a set schedule or time limit to post our replies to questions and situations?
Should we email or pm you with character background information?
I think that's about it for now... If I think of any other questions I'll let you know.
My character should be up in an hour or so... but if it's not it will be up by tommorrow night (local midnight rapidly approaches).

- I've tended to move faster in the past when I've done stuff, but a lot of that depends on how active and frequent you (collectively) post. I'm here every weekday just about, and even on busy workdays, I can check in several times a day. On weekends I'm not online as much, but I'll probably pop in on occasion. The game won't die unless I get down to only one or two players who are still showing an interest--that's what kills PBEMs or PBPs; the diaspora of players, in my experience. If we can keep a core group active and involved, the game should keep running.
- I haven't given that too much thought yet. Or, rather, I have given it some thought, but I haven't come to a conclusion--I prefer to let players roll as much as possible, but in this environment, that also slows the game down as I ask for a roll, and have to wait for the response, and then you have to wait for me to see that and move on.
What are all your thoughts there?
- I don't think so; just keep in mind that I'll be checking in three or four times a day most days. We'll feel it out and see how it goes.
- That depends on how secret from the other players you want to keep your background. Given the nature of the setting, I've arranged it so that you should all already know each other, at least superficially, and therefore some of your background should probably be common knowledge to the entire group. However, if there's stuff you don't think the other characters should know about you, but I need to, feel free to PM or email me.

As much as I love to roll the dice, I can see how that would slow us down. What if you, Hobo, used an online dice roller like irony, and emailed us the results? Or would that be a pain in the ass?

Invisible Castle is a great online dice roller. I personally have no preference as to whether I roll the dice or the GM does, and I usually end up doing a bit of both when I run PbPs (in combat, players roll dice, and they can make checks when they say they do something, but sometimes I'll have passive listen or spot checks that I make on my own).

I think that's what I'm leaning towards--if you're going to do something that would probably require a dice roll, go ahead and give me one from an online dice roller--Invisible Castle, or whatever.
If it's something like like a Spot or Listen check, or if it otherwise seems quicker, easier or more appropriate for me to roll, I'll just do it myself with the big baseball-sized d20 I have sitting on my computer cabinet.
