And so it begins....
Tonight, my son rolled up his first character: Borg, a Neutral Fighter. 3d6, but I helped him arrange the scores to best suit a fighter. He geared up with Plate, Shield, Sword, backpack, etc...
For a teaser, we decided that something had stolen his horse and gear, so Borg set out to find his stuff, with just his armor, sword, and some torches. He found some tracks which led to a cave, wherein he encounter a small tribe of Kobolds. The little guy played well, being cautious (even moving his mini "quietly"), listening at doors (without any hints from me), and used sound tactics (didn't charge into a room full of Kobolds, instead standing outside the door and waiting for them to come to him, for example.)
In the end, however, the Kobold King and his personal body guard got the drop on Borg, but that didn't matter to my son. I asked him how he liked it, and he said, "AWESOME! Well, except for when I died, but even that was pretty cool!"
Later, before I put him to bed, I told him a little about the history of the game and Gary Gygax, explaining that as cool as swords, sorcery, dragons, and magic are, they are nowhere near as cool as hanging out with you friends and having a good time, especially when one of them is your kid.
So, in honor of Gary Gygax and keeping the game and his memory alive, I'd like to welcome my son to our geeky little club, and a lifetime of adventure and good times with friends.
