I was kinda hoping we could get a book review.

Yeah, that's why I was hoping it would take longer before my outing: So that people would have a positive impression to supplant the original, negative one. But, that's my own fault.

Thanks. Prison is the best thing that every happened to me, but it's good to be back.

While I haven't read that book, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about my experiences.

Even though I like a good Drama Bomb 76% as much as the next guy, I think it would be great if you've really turned your life around. That sort of thing supports my faith in mankind.

What are you doing these days that has you headed in the right direction?

Fine, I'll say it because it's obvious -- VK is 100% right

Well, before all this happened, I couldn't imagine any life that was worth living. I had a lot of trouble in college for various reasons, and ended up withdrawing (twice). Even if I had graduated, I couldn't think of anything that I would want to do. That was the case even before I was first arrested, and it's part of what drove me to crime, along with greed, an obsessive personality, and a highly underdeveloped sense of right and wrong. And then obviously having a criminal record was going to make things worse. I was so messed up that when I ran off, I decided that if they found me I would just stab myself with the automatic knife that I carried. And that's exactly what I did. However, since I was under pressure at the time, I missed my heart and ended up hitting the diaphragm (so in addition to the tattoo, I now have some pretty wicked scars).

That was my rock bottom moment. For a few weeks after that I figured that pretty soon I would find some way to finish the job, but the nerve was gone. And in my copious spare time, as is my habit, I thought about some of the various innovations that occur to me periodically. One of them really caught my interest and I started to work harder on it, and then others, and the results were good enough that eventually I realized that I might be able to make a living as an independent inventor, and that I could imagine myself being satisfied with that. And over the past two years I've developed a long list of potentially profitable ideas.

The other important thing was that I was exposed to a lot of really evil people, and I didn't insulate myself from them like I did during my first stint in jail. A lot of them were very friendly, genuinely so, but once you talked to them for a little while you would get a feel for their values. People would brag about all the violence they'd inflicted on others for stupid reasons, talk casually about how many women they were cheating on at the same time, etc. Even at my most dickish, it was repulsive. And being repelled by that really pushed me in the opposite direction, and so I finally developed a genuine sense of morality.

The combination of those two effects has matured me be light years. It's changed everything. Right now I'm on home confinement at my parents' place, and since I can't pitch in any money yet I've been finding things to do around the house, like cleaning and yard work and home improvement projects. Plus I'm researching my ideas and trying to decide which to go after first. I'm also planning to get a day job, and to that end I'm going to enroll in the spring at Durham Tech and work toward (probably) some programming certs. Hopefully I can find some place that will give me a decent job despite the record, but I can wash dishes or bus tables if it comes down to that. I don't care. I'm very excited. A worthwhile future is a very energizing thing.

So if you're a real boy now Pinocchio, more power to you and I wish you well, genuinely.

I would hope you were in a medium security facility at absolute worst given your crimes. Hopefully it was more similar to what Gordon Liddy did time in because as far as I'm concerned, his crimes were far worse than yours.

Yeah, but G. Gordon Liddy is an American hero who tried to protect us from the onrushing socialist hordes. If it weren't for him we'd be living in the United States of Cuba.

The most secure place I was housed (excluding local jails, which are terrible) was FCI-I Butner, a medium. Incidentally, I met Bernie Madoff while I was there!
