I'm really liking this job. I do daily cleaning of certain parts of the pinsetters for all 24 of them. Of those, there are eight that are "mine," meaning that I'm responsible for periodically giving them a thorough cleaning (I usually do one per day). But the fun part is that from time to time something goes wrong on one of the machines, and I have to run and figure out what's up and fix it, which usually involves pulling levers and switches, re-attaching belts, clearing jammed pins and so forth.

The pinsetters are so cool. They were built in 1952 so there aren't any computer chips involved. The electronics amount to a few solenoids and contact switches; mostly it's all belts, pulleys, clutches, cranks, springs, levers, gears, etc. Sometimes when there's nothing to do I'll just sit on top of one and watch it work.

That is part of what makes it so appealing. It is easy to learn, but difficult to master.

For the inventor in you: Have you heard of "hackerspaces"? This is where technology interested, digital artists and the like meet and discuss ideas and can set down to make new stuff.

It seems the concept is more common in Germany, but you might want to see if there is someone around in your region.

Yeah but TechShop had all sorts of fancy tools to use, classes, even office space that you could rent.
