She won an Academy Award for some Oscar bait shit about transgender artists. Goes to show that a movie about the Left's current favorite incredibly rare social issue outweighs the pressing need to really think about AI safety and the question of artificial consciousness. Also the AI movie is like 90 something on Rotten Tomatoes vs the transgender movie at like 60 something.
Well, artists as a group are a punch of entitled pricks. "And some of them, I assume, are good people."

Androids and transgenders have in common that neither is what the casual viewer believes them to be. But everyone knows androids/robots are so much cooler then mere people! PLus: Summer Glau as a Terminator AI? Hawt! Summer Glau theoretically playing a pre-op trans born male? Okay, yes, still Summer Glau, so...

I do plan to watch The Danish Girl at some point. I'd forgotten she was in it, so her presence probably wasn't the reason I added it to my long list of Stuff To Watch Eventually.

Did you miss U.N.C.L.E.? If so, it was pretty decent.
I did miss that, yes. There's something about Armie Hammer I find vaguely off-putting, plus I'm sick of the endless recycling of old properties in general, so U.N.C.L.E. was pretty low priority for me.

Ex-Machina was exploring the concept of AI that doesn't want to be controlled (misaligned) and, if you listen to some of the interviews with the director, that is an unconscious intelligence. Highly capable, no one home, completely amoral.
Something I believe Ex Machina has in common with HBO's take on Westworld.

And Elon Musk is merely acting on Nick Bostrom's ideas. People so eager to dismiss superintelligent AI need to read his book.
I have. I think he's skewing very strongly on the paranoid side.

It was a good movie though.

He very well could be, but that's not a counter argument. Nick Bostrom does seem to be an overly cautious person, but then again, Musk famously doesn't. How much do you think we ought to be spending on the AI alignment problem? Corollary: is it worth betting the future of humanity on it?

Also, did you understand that book? I recall it requiring a fairly high level of mathematical and philosophical literacy, and I didn't think you had that sort of education. Reviews have called it dense, opaque, and hard to read.

Westworld makes the mistake of linking consciousness with free will, and ponders if the robots have free will. Might as well ask if they have souls. The question is, do they have experiences? Can they suffer? It's a good show, don't get me wrong, and brings up many interesting moral questions. Sam Harris and Paul Bloom did a very interesting podcast on such issues, which was initially titled "Raping Dolores" tho retitled "Abusing Dolores". First title too edgy heh.

I love podcasts. We should start up a Random Podcast Thoughts thread.

edit: That podcast doesn't start talking about robots in media until like 55 minutes in.

    IMO? Yes.

The math blew past me, as I stopped hard at trig in school. But one doesn't need college to become educated. Specially not in philosophy (which I am well versed in).

And yes, reading it was like chewing a brick. But that just means you take longer doing it.
