    Random Entertainment Thoughts

    They work well elsewhere.

Watching Avatar the cartoon series now after finishing 9 seasons of Smallville (I have the newer slowed down theme song too). Wanted to watch Lois and Clark again, but it just bugged me after watching Smallville.

Any suggestions for what to queue up next? JL and JLU were a thought, or something more adult.

I watched Lois and Clark before I really got into Smallville (especially the later seasons), so I'm curious if I'd have this issue, too. What did you find difficult about it? Was it too campy?

What are you in the mood for? If you're hankering after cartoons, Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited are awesome choices. Belen would also recommend the anime series Gundam Seed which has a really good story line and characters. (It's one of his all-time favorite cartoons).

If you're in the mood for something more adult, can you be more specific? Sci Fi? Drama? Action? Comedy?

In my Random Entertainment thoughts we finished up all the Doctor Who featuring David Tennant and all of Torchwood last week. I was actually feeling pretty down when we finished it... like getting to the end of the really good book and not wanting it to be over.

Last night we started watching Season 2 of True Blood. I'm liking it a lot better than Season 1 (which we saw about a year ago). Less nasty sex and more interesting characters/story lines. What drives me crazy about it, though, is that every episode feels like a cliff hanger and you are driven to keep watching episode after episode.

I've done the same thing. I'm now completely caught up with the new Doctor Who series (Five seasons in as many weeks) and craving more.

No more new shows 'til Christmas...

Yeah, we watched 4 seasons of Doctor Who and all of Torchwood in like 3 weeks. I think it'll be a little while before the fifth season of Doctor Who hits NetFlix "Watch It Now".

By the way, NetFlix + PS3 has totally revolutionized the way we watch TV shows. It's so awesome just to be able to download shows, watch them, and then delete them from the queue when we're done.

Watching the Star Wars movies, especially the new ones, with young boys helps recapture some of the enjoyment and excitement of the story, even with the bad acting.

Did you just imply that there wasn't bad acting in the original trilogy?

There's plenty of sex in Season 2 of True Blood. Most of it seems to be of the "making love" variety though, which I'm totally cool with.

Between that scene and Tara's characater in general, I just really couldn't get past the first few episodes of True Blood.

My husband and I have been slowly working through eurka between picking up movies we missed, and of course dr who this time of year. It's a fun, quirky show. I like it.

I was working my way through buffy again, but season 6 is always like a brick wall to me - it's so depressing.

I re-watched the first season of castle. I can't wait for season two to come out on dvd. Nathian Fillion is so cute and flirty and fun in that show, I love it.

The flying was awkward, he's significantly slower, and the stories aren't quite so tight. It's a little campier, but not in a bad way. Superman is less emo, and more fun-loving (I love that he is constantly trying to have fun with his powers). The effects are also just... bad. Then again, I only watched the first 6 shows (most of which I had seen before in some way).

Didn't help that they ignored some cannon of Supes. His ship was in the hands of the government and Sam Lane is a surgeon dealing with cybernetic limbs?

Dr Who is a thought. I may just got with the Justice League stuff though if I'm in a superhero's mood. True Blood never caught my attention, and I think I'll avoid sex stuff if I'm possibly watching it while at work/working from home

We are very fortunate to live within walking distance of a half-dozen independent video shops, each with their own particular tastes and so on. For the stuff we like to watch it's a real blessing.

Speaking of which, was recommended Kill Zone -- a Donnie Yen pic from 2005 -- and it was really great. Not quite the return to the glory days of HK action, but certainly a worthy successor. I've never been a huge Donnie Yen fan but he really threw down in this. A great baton vs knife fight, and the Donnie vs Sammo Hung for the finale...

Love to see Sammo play some more bad guys. He looks so bad-ass with prison tats and a ponytail!

Until this thread, I'd never heard the phrase 'Independent video shop'. All we've ever had were Movie Galley, Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. All but I think two Blockbusters are closed now.

The last time I went to a Blockbuster it was to cut up my card with a pair of scissors and leave the peices there on the checkout desk. I don't even remember what they did to piss me off so completely.

I tried their online service for a little bit about, mm, a year after it started? Or less? It sucked, terribly. It was hard to find anything, impossible to rent a series that didn't conveniently have the number on the box cover, and just all-around bad. They would also send me movies from my queue apparently at random instead of the order the queue was in.

A couple weeks ago, I tried them again in sheer desperation to see Pontypool, which Netflix still has listed as unavailable. Watched it and one other movie smilarly listed, then cancelled the service. Things are still hard to find, the 'new releases' is even more of a joke than Netflix's, and when they sent the second movie I also got a duplicate sent at the same time with an empty sleeve in it. Eh, cancelled it.

Saw Neil Marshall's Centurion last night. Big improvement over Doomsday (I know some people here liked that for its window dressing but I just found it clumsy and dull), but not on the level of The Descent. Some great stuff, but the story needed tightening up and the sentimental ending just did not work.

Great fight scenes, though, and great performances -- so he's gotten back to form on those fronts. I just wish they'd done another pass on the script.
