REFORM SCHOOL NINJA GIRLS II -- Game Thread

    Eri-chan:

You were not wrong to be angry, but you must not address our Master in the fashion you did. No matter how angry you are, little sister, he deserves your respect.

Master has asked me to write to you and to assure you that despite what the other clan leaders are saying, he is sure you are guilty of no serious wrong-doing, and to offer you and all your new friends a safe home here among us of the Shadow Claw. Captain Sung who bears this note is a friend of Master's and will convey you and the others to Vargas, where Master wishes to welcome you home.

The Shadow Claw Clan needs your strong arm, Eri-chan. Do not turn away from Master now.

    - Matsuyama

Captain Sung has proven affable enough for a smuggler, and his junk the Horizon Star may be crewed by some of the toughest mugs you ever looked at, but it cuts through the waves nimbly enough and aside from the occasional leer, the crew has behaved with nothing but respect towards their unusual passenger manifest.

As the Horizon Star noses around the cape that protects the city from the weather, the girls catch their first glimpse of the infamous town of Vargas.

The island of Kazzal is cliff-ringed and surrounded by ever-raging seas. The one safe anchorage here, deep in the heart of the great archipelago that is home to both ninja clans and Dino-Pirates brotherhoods, is a semi-circular bay that appears to have been cut out of the cliffs. The walls of the harbour are vertical and rise several hundred feet out of the spray and surge of the waves.

But these cliff walls throng with people, and are carved with innumerable balconies, out-thrust towers, porticos and open caverns that lead the approaching eye inwards to darkness. Smoke pours from thousands of vents and chimneys, wreathing the bay in dark clouds. The sounds of smithies, of great engines and most of all the incessant buzz of trade -- hauling cables, shrieking merchants and groaning stevedores -- clamour across the waves to where the Horizon Star approaches.

Dozens of ships are moored in the harbour, dotted across the calm surface at the various sturdy piers that rise up out of the water. With casual commands and seemingly only half an eye on his ship, Captain Sung sets his ship scooting through the crowded anchorage. Watching from her deck, the Horizon Star seems a mere shadow to some of the greater vessels here: a pair of potent brigantines with matching (though unfamiliar) colours and numerous battle scars, an immense (but perhaps not entirely seaworthy) junk with a strange and savage flag featuring what looks most like a giant pie, and to everyone's surprise a towering Imperial quadreme -- although NOT flying the Imperial dragon standard, to everyone's immediate relief. And of course these princely vessels are surrounded by veritable clouds of lesser ships; cargo haulers like the Horizon Star, disreputable frigates and sloops, jaunty private yachts that look speedy but none too sturdy, and low-slung fishing boats that look as though they'd go under in anything more stormy than a sheltered mill-pond.

There is a faintest bit of a shiver as your vessel draws up to a free pier; Eri and Masayo both recognize the Shadow Claw Clan's symbol flying on a silver banner. Lines are tied off and everyone looks up as an immense crane swivels out from the cliffside.

This crane looks like half of a suspension bridge -- a firmly-built arm of great timbers easily a hundred feet long, supported by numerous cables leading back to the cliff face above where the arm is hinged. Attached to its underside is a complex arrangement of pulleys and cables that rolls outwards along the arm, dangling a massive iron hook.

"Stand away! Stand away there! You don't want that coming through you, ladies!"

Captain Sung attempts to shoo the girls aside as his crew leaps into action, throwing open cargo hatches and dragging cables in all directions. The hook comes swinging nearer as they ready to unload.

"We'll get you ashore in no time, ladies, just be patient. Business has to come first, you know!"

Millicent, ever the responsible one, keeps a careful eye on Ayako and Yumi... figuring they're the most likely to be off in a world of their own and wear a cargo hook in the face.

And Ritsuko, who's all too likely to get too close deliberately, given her fascination with things like complex arrangements of pulleys and cables...

Masayo speaks in a calm and soothing tone, "It'll be good to be on land girls, but we must remain ever vigilant to our enemies. Seems they are all around us. But I have faith that we will figure out this plot against us and our revenge will be sweet."

"Master Hisakino has extended his hand in protection over us," Millicent reminds her. She gestures to the Shadow Claw banner on the pier. "Here in his demesnes, we can relax somewhat - his honour would suffer, should we be attacked after he offered sanctuary. I'd wager there are unseen Shadow Claw providing us perimeter security at this moment."

Ayako is oblivious to the captain as she stares at the giant junk's flag while leaning on her shikomi-zue and thinking about what flavor the pie must be. If moved she'll go along with eyes still fixed on the flag. Her thoughts slowly wander to what kinds of other exotic foods will be available in Vargas.

Kaori does her best not to look impressed by the mass of ships crowding the harbor and the town looming over all and stands proudly on the deck, out of the way of the cargo movement.

Eri, ever suspicious, scans the harbor, looking for hidden dangers and threats that might hide in the shadow of a spectical, keeping a close hand to her weapons.

The reach of the shadow is great, Eri agrees quietly, but danger is ever present, even from within.

"I am not questioning the honor of the great and generous Master Hisakino or the Shadow Clan. But... I also thought we were safe on Ninja Island and look how that turned out."

"Yes. If Ninja Island can be corrupted, who knows what else can occur?" Kaori goes back to brooding.

The gantry overhead comes to a grinding, shivering halt directly above the Horizon Star. A number of figures scurry about up there, hauling on cables and levers as they operate the massive machinery, apparently unconcerned with the death-defying drop beneath them. the still-swinging hook begins its inexorable descent, as the ship's crew lines up wide bundles for haulage.

Captain Sung bellows out commands to his disreputable crew, getting everything arranged for the unloading. Meanwhile, assorted longboats and even some canoes begin pulling up alongside, offering ferry services ashore, fresh fruit, fresh water, fresher... services. It's a motley mix of Imperials, natives and the usual pirate melange of ethnic types crewing these boats, but Sung doesn't appear to give them a second glance so this swarm of attention must be normal...

Predictably enough, I'm going to ask for a round of Notice checks, please. If you don't have Notice spelled out amongst your skills, it's just a straight Wisdom check.

Kaori still stares disinterestedly around her, trying not to seem like she's gawking.

Eri "eyes like a hawk" notice: 16 (roll 17+ -1 Wis)

Edit: I just rolled a die at home. Should I be using the on-line thingee?

Use whatever you want. Lots of folks aren't at home as they play and can't readily roll dice.
