What makes chili peppers hot? Answered

Capsaicin, a chemical compound. In addition to making your mouth feel like it’s on fire, capsaicin has health benefits – it’s been shown to relieve back pain and arthritis.

Units of something. I remember watching a contest and each pepper had a unit rating. Heck if I can remember units of what, though.

Capsacin(sp?). The unit measure for hotness is the Scoville(sp?). But that doesn't make them hot.
