    Claude Monet was a renowned French impressionist painter, but his father, Adolphe Monet, originally wanted Claude to become what?

    I really don't know/remember. I know that Degas had been a stockbroker. Maybe Monet was supposed to have been an engineer but got waylaid by the seduction of new paints available in tubes so he could go wild with the plein air painting that we know him for. He did some paintings of rail bridges and of train shed interiors that makes me think of the engineering path.

    But now, after reflection, I want to say that I think his father wanted him to become a physician. His father may have been one himself. I'll stop guessing now and go back to whatever I was doing.

    I'mma guess a goldsmith, since as historic trades go, that's where some of the best Serious Money was.

    Also, you didn't die at ~30 or so from a used-up body, or stone dust in your lungs, etc.

    A grocer. Adolphe wanted Claude to take over the family grocery business, but Claude had other ambitions.
