It made a keenly-felt shortage of English heads to play the game with?

Dark the stars and dark the moon
Hush the night and the morning loon
Tell the horses and beat on your drum

Dark the oceans, dark the sky
Hush the whales and the ocean tide
Tell the salt marsh and beat on your drum
Gone their master, gone their son.

He wanted to build some windmills near the golf course, but knew people would protest that they:

    A. Lower the value of their property "bigly."
    B. Cause cancer.
    C. Would remind people that he never released his tax returns.
    D. Made it too difficult to get the ball through the tower when the vanes were turning.

I can't remember what the official reason was and what the apocryphal reason was... but... one was because all males over 12 were supposed to be training with bows, not playing golf and football (and both were wildly more popular with the youths), and two was because people were playing inside towns, in alleys and closed off yards, and it was considered dangerous.

    Correct!

It was distracting his citizens from their archery practice. Football was also banned, on the same grounds.
