Who originated the idea of the lost kingdom of Atlantis? Answered

Plato. Atlantis first appeared in his dialogues “Tiameus” and “Critias,” penned around 330 BCE. The legend of the kingdom lost to the sea has captured the popular imagination ever since.

It was first mentioned in Timeaus and Critias, so.... :drumroll: ... Plato.

Damn I should have guessed too. I also thought Plato this morning, but wasn't sure at all.

Yeah. Plato is the first written reference I've heard describe it.

I think it was a reference to the mammoth eruption of the volcano on Thera (modern day Santorini). It destroyed the bronze age civilization there (centered in Akrotiri -- many of the murals have been excavated and are in the National Archaeological museum in Athens) and all that remains is the caldera where the volcano once was. It was a pretty extreme eruption with such dispersal of ash (it's been found in lake beds in Turkey) that it caused a drop in global temperature for a while afterwards.
