Rubberneckin the Post-Apocalypse [Movie & Media Discussion]

So, since Para and I both love Post-Apoc, I figure we could do a thread where anyone can talk about Post-Apoc movies, books, tv shows, comics, hot-dog stands, etc. Give a half-assed review, a recommendation, or directions to avoid at all cost. Whateves.

I'll start off with this new hotness that just flashed across my desk:

This is some hard-assed post-apocness right here. Sure, it's a Supers Post-Apoc, but I really do love genre mashups.

    Hmmmm....odd, but interesting.

I finished "The FP" and the whole thing was a laugh riot. And then I found out they made a SEQUEL! Apparently it came out in fall of 2018, but I couldn't find it online.

I've got some other stuff dl'ed and the short list to get to soon is (in no particular order):

    "Hell" (from 2011)
    "She Wolves Of The Wasteland"
    "The Colony"
    "The Day"
    "The New Barbarians"
    "The Bronx Warriors"
    "Battletruck"

Also need to finish getting a few things that showed up on some IMDB lists of post-apoc movies, stuff like "Wheels of Fire", "Hell Comes To Frogtown" (that title made me giggle, so I figured I *had* to get it).

I'm really picky when it comes to wasting time or money on movies so I haven't seen the other ones... but...

I loved Rowdy Roddy Piper back in the day (and Sandahl Bergman) so of course I've seen this "masterpiece". It's special.

    [EDIT]
I just googled the other ones and I actually have Hell [2011] on my harddrive I just haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

I mean it's made by the guy who brought us The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, so how terrible can it be?

(based on those two movies, pretty terrible, but it got better reviews than they did so I've got hopes)

Also sitting around waiting to be watched (and vaguely in the post-apoc genre) are Los Ultimos Dias [2013] and The Divide [2011]

Oh... and I watched Bird Box. Just skip it. I mean, okay, if you enjoy terrible post-apoc movies, go ahead, catch it. But don't expect it to be good.

I'll put those on my list to scope out the plot, see if they pique my interest to get them.

Like...terrible-terrible, or terrible-good? All I know is it has something to do with blindfolds.

I mean, Bounty Killers was terrible-good, but that's because it was intentionally done that way. Campy, hilarious, over-the-top. The FP was a little bit of the same, but more ironic/tongue-in-cheek humour. Still hilarious, and I have to say I absolutely recommend it (and it's not even really post-apoc/dystopian, which I think is part of the joke) for a good night's laugh.

Back on the post-apoc train. Tonight's selection is "Hell", which is looking good so far. It's in German and I was catching most of it, but the guy sort of mumbles and runs his words together, so I opted for subtitles.

I had started out watching an older movie that I had finally managed to download called "The New Barbarians", but after a minute or so I realized that there is also apparently a (really bad) porn of the same title. I guess my first clue that this was not going to be even a bad-good post-apoc movie was when my initial thought was "Jeezus, that's a really bad-looking cheapass wig on him. Almost as bad as Mira's from Aquaman."

"Hell" was actually pretty decent. Definitely on the bleak side, but nicely done. Definitely worth watching as just a good movie, IMO.

I don't think I've ever seen a captive-bolt gun used to such surprising and useful effect.

Also, why does everything in the post-apocalyptic universe seemingly always come down to cannibalism ?

SPOILER the other white meat. Except when it's dark...

Though, honestly I don't think it's even come up in a quarter of the post-apoc movies I've watched... I'd have to check...

Hmmm, maybe it's combination of post-apoc books and movies.

You know what always seems to come up to me? Sand. Like I can certainly name movies and tv shows that are post-apoc and not full to the brimming with sandy wastes, but man Road Warrior did a number on the genre...

Because of the 'wasteland' thing, I guess. Also, dust.

Lots of both at Wasteland, too. And it's always airborne, because of the W. After a couple of hours, just about any exposed skin gets crusty with it.

We people-monkeys already associate sand with desolation. We also associate apocalyose with desolation. Easy pairing for a quick thematic hit of "desolation."

So we need a twist on that.

A super-virus infects all plant life, increasing its growth rate by a factor of 10 to 100, and makes the plants poisonous (for humans, for humans and animals?). The only survivors are those that were immune to the poison, and those that eat the immune/could pay for cleaned-up-food/plant-human hybrids.
    Movie Poster:
Ivy Towers - Picture of a completely overgrown Manhattan - "In a future were plants rule the world, one (wo)man ..."

This is one of those "look at the shows made before* Road Warrior†, then look at the shows made after..." situations. The shows before often just feature ruined cities* and nature untrammeled by man, those that come after are all desert wastelands.

Granted, this may have more to do with the the collapse of détente, but the Road Warrior movie is what I generally blame.

    * This includes Mad Max! Which is why I suspect it was the collapse of détente that shifted the world of Mad Max from economic destabilization and insurgence of criminality as it's dystopian themes, to aftermath of war that shifted the global climate into apocalyptic desert wastes.
