    reveal's Daily Trivia 1.10.19

What was the original title of Return of the Jedi, the third installment in the first Star Wars trilogy? Answered

Revenge of the Jedi. Although the title was changed, revenge did make its way into another Star Wars title – Revenge of the Sith, the third installment in the prequel trilogy.

"Original"... what a loaded term. Originally it was called Return of the Jedi, however briefly during production it was called Revenge of the Jedi as it's working title, but before release Lucas went back and reinstated the first title.

I just went and looked it up and it was during initial screenplay writing that Lawrence Kasdan (the screenwriter) suggested that Return was "too weak" of a title, and that Revenge would sound stronger. So the title was switched. It was later during shooting that Lucas decided the ending needed to be 'happier' to help push merchandising (Han wasn't killed off, Luke doesn't limp off into the sunset like a spaghetti western hero) and he decided to switch the name back to reinforce the upbeat theme.
