The 10 bucks a month gets you 4k and select games. Otherwise you get 1080p. You can buy games for use on the platform. As for renting, most developers now have a subscription service, so you could subscribe for a month to get temp access. Balder's Gate 3, for example, is part of the xbox subscription service at 15 bucks a month. It might also be part of that 10 bucks a month for Stadia Pro.

edit: and it's not a cheap chromecast device, but a Chromecast Ultra (the 4k chromecast). It's 60 bucks.

The Founders edition bundle is 130 for controller, chromecast ultra, and 3 months of Pro. Seems reasonably priced.

Stadia is about as valuable to me as Steam, which is to say of no value at all.

Your resistance to steam is rather hilarious. Steam has been the single best thing to happen to indie pc game developers. A ton of great games would not exist if not for steam.

I insist on owning my games, not renting them.

If you burn it to a disk... yes.

On that note, I don't mind GOG despite the fact that they too could fold at any moment because I can burn a GOG game to disk and always have it.

Steam goes away? That's it. And I had that very thing happen repeatedly with a game I was gifted from Steam back when you had to log into Steam every week or so to play. That turned my already "Eh, no I'm not happy with this distro model" right straight into "KILL IT WITH FIRE!"

    Interesting news that interests me...

Stardock and Star Control creators settle lawsuits—with mead and honey

    A surprising—and surprisingly amicable—conclusion to the multi-year legal saga.
I'm not particularly a Star Control fan, it's an okay game, but I am a Stardock fan so this news is welcome.

And in "Oh fuck you Nintendo..." news:

Of course this will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive. And it s a shitty tactics style mobile game. Because fucking why not make it shit while you're at it right Nintendon't?

    Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-

Mead and honey are absolutely valid barter/payment items, I've bartered for both, the most amusing trade being a virtually-brand-new Boba Fett wallet I found at Goodwill to a fanboy whose wife keeps bees. Good on them.

Dark the stars and dark the moon
Hush the night and the morning loon
Tell the horses and beat on your drum
Gone their master, gone their son.

Dark the oceans, dark the sky
Hush the whales and the ocean tide
Tell the salt marsh and beat on your drum
Gone their master, gone their son.

For rel, next time you Dwarf Fort... and all of us Minecrafters. Finally the metal song we've all been waiting for*.

    * Yes, it's the YOGSCAST's "Diggy Diggy Hole" song done by a metal band. Thanks Para!

I was unaware of the history, but just figured it was about D&D dwarven stereotypes and found it amusing.

It started as a Minecraft Youtuber (Simon and Lewis of the YOGSCAST) where Simon goofs around a lot and he just started singing "I am a dwarf, digging a hole, diggy-diggy hole, diggy-diggy hole..." and eventually developed from there. The song alludes to fantasy nerd shit, but it was a love song to Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress (which themselves draw from Tolkien and other fantasy nerd shit).
