That is shocking no wonder you have such a high prison population.

    Eh... two things:

1 - I'd want better sources before the word of a Tumblr post...

2 - Correlation is not causation. In other words, I suspect it's high prison populations that have moved industry into the prison population, rather than 'slavery' by the 'Prison-Industrial Complex'. that have caused high prison populations.
    I wouldn't even censor you.

I assure you if it says "American Made" the odds are that it was NOT made by prison labor.

First, the author gets a major part of this wrong - it's still bound by the wage laws. Where that says Whole Foods pays $0.74 "to the prisoner", that's a blatant misrepresentation. Whole Foods pays the normal minimum wage (or more). The Prisoner might receive only $0.74, but that's because the prison first confiscated part of the wages as reimbursement for either the fine that was accolade to the prisoner during sentencing for the victim or for the Government, for if there is a law providing for reimbursement for prisoner costs then it can be for that. Either way, Whole Foods is paying a whole lot more, it's the prison taking that money.

Most of the labor is for the prison itself (like doing laundry) or for the state (like firefighting), not to make goods or services for private industry; though some of that does happen. The bulk of the private industry stuff is in agriculture - and agriculture does not typically come with a "Made in America" label.

There is this article from the LA Times, "Think Prison Labor is a Form of Slavery? Think Again."

Shit like this gets to me, because I run a real manufacturing facility that produces real made-in-America goods, and so do many other companies, and when you go around telling people "Made In America is unethical prison labor!" you hurt my company and companies like mine and real employees across the nation. It's an incredibly small percent of products which are made by prisoners and are for sale to the public. Do not fucking tar my company with your pet issues with prison labor. If you can't be honest about the issue that has you upset, then don't talk about it until you can bring yourself to be honest.

Given the history of the US I'm suspecting that the causation goes the way it looks like until disproven...

Norway didn't ban slavery within their controlled territories until when again?

Slave Trading past still haunts Norway.

In fact, how is that lawsuit against Norway for slave trading going? Oh wait, you mean the U.S. has had to deal with some of the longer term mess Noway (along with Denmark) left in what is now called the U.S. Virgin Islands? huh.

I think the Netherlands didn't free the last of their slaves until 1873 in Suriname (8 years after it ended in the U.S.). Europeans seem to frequently forget about their slavery past...as if Europe didn't set up that fucked up system to begin with an export it to what was to become the United States.

But Misty, the Socialists didn't do nuthin wrong!

The reason the Left likes to ignore such niggling details is it makes it hard to point to their favorite socialized democracy as being 'perfect'. In Ulrik's case... well... it's probably fascism nationalism.

Just because it's one of the least diverse first world nations on the planet with anti-immigration and anti-islamic politicians doesn't mean we should focus on their history of slave trading...oh wait.
