The Pain of Universal Health Care

An American undergoes surgery in Germany, and has to deal with the lack of pain medicine:

I never thought about the differences between Germany and the US in this regard.

The Doctor's have a point, without pain you don't realise when you should be resting and taking the time to heal. I think she was trying to make that point in the article but it did come off as a little whiny, although I think the author intended that.

There is a dark side to this attitude.

My oldest brother recently had knee surgery. He was sent home with pain meds (not sure what but wouldn't be surprised if it was opiates).

He did not take them because he was afraid of getting addicted. Because he didn't, he was in too much pain to use the knee. Because he didn't use the knee, scar tissue formed and he had to have another procedure to remove it.

I think we can somehow find a middle ground between "suck it up buttercup" and "opiates are candy now" .

Problem is people want things bigger, stronger, faster and don't know moderation.

I am scared, to the point of being phobic, of medicine. I know that sounds stupid but hear me out - I have always had difficulty controlling my impulses, and this board has seen a couple examples when I've failed. The thought of having even less impulse control from being high on something terrifies the shit out of me.

When I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed at the same time I was sent home with a 14 day supply of oxy and a month's supply of 600mg ibuprofrin. I ended up taking 1 1/2 pills of the oxy and three ibuprofrins, that was it. I endured the rest.

I would have bought the oxy.
Signature too big and pornographic. Next offense will be a ban.
