    For my son’s first birthday, my younger brother went through Toys R Us and pushed. Every. Button.

    He then bought the most annoying toy of the bunch.

    The toy fire engine he picked was my sons favorite toy for 2 goddamn years.

    Nicely done.

    I almost got this little guy a fire engine toy with lights, noises and real water-squirting capacity, but thought that might not go over the best.

    I did get him two floor puzzles, a lights/noises raygun (I actually wanna order one too so I can steampunk it ), a Simon, and an educational toy that's some sort of wand that tells you to do different dance moves with music and stuff. I hope he likes it.
    News I bring;
    Bells the stag, winter snow
    Summer is past
    Wind high and cold
    Low the sun, short its course
    Seas run strong;
    The russet bracken its shape is lost
    Wild goose raises wanton cry
    Cold lays hold on wings of bird
    Time of ice
    This I heard.

    That'll do it. Other great choices for nieces and nephews are drum kits or rollerskates.

    Melissa & Doug make a product called "Band in a Box," that has plenty of noisemaking musical instruments. I bought them as Christmas gifts for my niece & nephews one year. I also bought their parents some Advil to go along with the instruments.

    Got a message from a friend today that said, "I've been looking at some period recipes for hippocras gelatin. They all start out with boiling calves feet. Do you have any experience with that sort of thing?"

    I guess I'm flattered that I'm the first person he'd think to ask that sort of question? Because, the things I do.

    Edit: Bonus point round; after he mentioned that he thought calves' feet might be hard to come by, I respond with "Not at all; find someone who works at a dairy and ask for a couple of the (inevitable) calf carcasses during calving season (Jan-Mar). I've thought of doing that to get a couple calf skins for making true vellum."

    Okay, on second thought, maybe I *was* the right person to ask about that sort of thing.

    Happy Yule, Saturnalia, Festivus, etc. everyone.

    May you have as many cattle as sparks off the Yule log.

    Oh gods, no. I am not fenced for cattle. My mom keeps wanting to offload some of her mini Jersey cows onto my place, to which the answer is a flat and unequivocal NO. Bad enough that she broke her leg at the end of Oct. by being stupid enough to leave her tractor in gear, so it rolled onto her and pinned her against some stuff. Now she's back in the hospital because the pins/plates incision area got infected. The mate and I made the 8-hr. round trip while she was in the hospital the first time to basically go and forcibly remove some of the critters from her place to mine so that A) I knew they would get fed (she had no hay at her place at the time of the accident ) if they're with me, and B) since I knew she'd be stubborn/irrational/stupid enough to insist she went back home, I figured the fewer critters she had to take care of, the less likely she'd be to injure herself further. Sigh.

    No cattle, here. Forget that noise. Not unless they're going straight into the freezer.
