For what it's worth, I had hoped he would let the Russians wrap that Syrian crisis up, which would mean quieter times for Europe, but we will see. Or in other words, I'm really just amused about this, and it's not just a diversion from my side.
I've always been curious, are you actually in Austria? My grandparents are from there and I grew up with stories of Vienna (pre-war Vienna, of course).

Yup, Vienna, Austria. I had been living in the US for more than a decade, but I've been back to Europe now for a few years.

I guess the stories of your grandparents were not all happy.

Well the later years were not of course, but in general they were very fond of Vienna. My grandfather used to love the coffee houses and opera there. My grandmother loved Christmas in the city, despite being Jewish. I've always wanted to visit. My brother did, and took pictures of the building my grandparents lived in, which is still in use.

I secretly* hope he goes two terms just so the Democrat meltdown goes critical.

But really, I'd like a real prospect to step up in 3 years and upend this apple cart.

And yeah, I'm, willing to watch people die for less. At least with the lulz I get a laugh.

I'm not into the Pepe speculation market, being a communist I believe the Rare Pepes should be available to all.

Madness does not always howl. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "Hey, is there room in your head for one more?"

I is before E except after C, then it's chaos man, mass chaos! Letters coming together into words, but then you go English and they put U's in places that just shouldn't go there... AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

My sanity left town along time ago and didn't leave a forwarding address. It's not missed.

Looks as if we will get a right-wing government in Austria this fall. The foreign minister (Sebastian Kurz) from the "People's Party" (right-wing/conservative), who is just 30 years old, wants to become chancellor. His party basically disempowered itself when the party leader and vice chancellor stepped down and the rest of the party leadership told the foreign minister he would have free hand to choose his own team to go into the election and form a government afterwards. He wants to work with the "Freedom Party" (populist/far right with some fascist tendencies).

It's clear that the current coalition with the Social-Democratic Party doesn't work. They are just arguing all the time and get nothing done. Let's see how this will turn out. If things turn sour here for foreigners, I'll just leave.

Edit: Wrong thread. Well, who cares, I guess.

I'm guessing you* haven't been having the same problems with immigrants that other EU countries have been having?

Well, Austria is one of the three countries that took most of the refugees during the peak crisis. However, Austria turned around its policies quickly, and this was done by the government led by the Social Democrats. For example, it was crucial in closing the Balkan route. Bulgaria treats refugees that badly (they just beat them up) that those are afraid of entering the country, so that's more or less closed. Austria helps Macedonia with keeping its borders closed, and although Greece and the EU are furious about this, they can't do anything as Macedonia is no EU country. Austria also said it will close the border to Italy at any time the number of refugees per day rises above a certain threshold. Which means that the actual refugee crisis is pretty much over here, except for some fights with the EU bureaucracy over numbers.

However, there are other misgivings. Like in most European countries, the far right voters are mostly in those areas that do not actually see many foreigners. They may be victims of a sluggish economy, but their fear of foreigners is mostly unfounded. They just don't live there where the jobs are. Here in the city, on 1/1/2016, 35% of the population of 1.85 million was born abroad. It's pretty distributed though, with about 15% of all foreigners being Serbs, and the next groups are Turks, Poles, Germans, Bosniaks and Romanians. Romanians are a touchy subject (especially the Roma). They are EU citizens and can come as they want, but there are huge resentments at play. The administration that deals with foreigners is in general already now a bit - difficult, as I experienced myself. However, despite the situation in the city, it still re-elected the coalition of Social Democrats and Greens. Here in the city, the far right Freedom Party has most of its voters on the other side of the Danube, where the unemployed workers live next to lots of Arab clans and other Muslims in big tenements. The panoramic view doesn't help.

For me personally, I can see that I will just get to feel the brunt of some nuisance policies that a right wing government will probably introduce. Austria is already now stretching EU rules to the limit or even above it. It's like it was in the US: the people complain about illegals, the government will make a show of action, and it's much easier to make life difficult for the legals than for those the citizens complain about.

I wonder how much of Austria's anti immigrant movement is related to the old conflicts between Austria-Hungary and the Ottomans.
