Have you EVER watched a Mob movie? The threat wasn't to be honest, it was to be silent. Its to make you wonder "what dirt does he have on me?" and rather than go forward and suffer some sort of embarrassment or shame, to clam up and NOT share what you know. Trump didn't want Comey to be honest, he wanted him to be quiet.

This. Anybody with a brain would know that Trump was trying to intimidate Comey. It back-fired on him and he's trying to spin it into a win. Only his supporters are buying it.

LOL he threatened to release the tape of the conversation that Comey was testifying about. It was clearly a threat to make him tell the truth and not fib or twist of leave out important parts of their conversation. It was not about being silent - he couldn't be silent in that situation. Nor was it a threat about something he had "on" Comey as it was a threat ABOUT THAT CONVERSATION which didn't involve anything being "on" Comey.

It's pretty fucking obvious what happened - he told Trump that Trump was not under investigation and Trump was concerned Comey would continue to claim he had never told Trump that. Comey initially told the press he had never said that to the President, but once he was testifying he admitted he had in fact told him that. It sure seems like Trump's threat about the tape may be why Comey suddenly decided to admit he had told Trump that Trump was not under investigation.

Yes it was intimidation, but as usual you don't complete the thought. Intimidate him TO DO WHAT? It was intimidation to get Comey to tell the full truth during his testimony. That was the threat. He made that real clear.

It back-fired on him and he's trying to spin it into a win. Only his supporters are buying it.
I am not his supporter by any stretch of the imagination and I think Trumps threat was idiotic and crude and absurd. But I also think it may have been an important factor in getting Comey to finally admit he had in fact told Trump, repeatedly, that Trump was not a subject of their investigation. Which is what Trump had been saying for weeks, and which Comey had initially contradicted through back channels. In that sense, it didn't backfire. It got Trump exactly the result he wanted - Comey made the admission on record.

And the fact that Comey went ahead anyway is testament to his character, since the tapes were not ever really thought to exist but the inherent threat of, "You reveal my dirt, I'll reveal yours," was the main thrust. Only someone who doesn't have any dirt to reveal, would continue forward.

Trump, however, is nothing but dirt. Scummy, scummy dirt.

Okay, let's walk this path for a moment. If the tapes of the conversation Trump had with Comey had dirt on Comey, then Comey has no integrity -- he's dirty and talked about it with Trump. Since this, in any sense doesn't make a damn bit of sense, why would Comey feel threatened by non-existent dirt? He was there, he knows what was said (or dimly recalls as a book plot), and tapes tend to be of what actually was said, so.... I'm trying really damn hard to understand this train of thought you have -- that Comey bravely risked everything to testify because Trump might have released the tapes where Comey incriminates himself, but he was gonna do the right thing now -- but I feel I need either LSD or a frontal lobotomy to get there.

And Comey has not integrity -- he testified that he allowed Loretta Lynch to restrict the Clinton investigation and he failed to clear Trump so that he could use that leverage to keep his job. Comey's as political as they come.

Comey had no reason to lie and every reason to tell the bald truth, he was hopping mad at Trump and his integrity was on the line. Trump couldn't do anything about it, so was reacting in a knee-jerk adolescent manner.

I don't think Trump put much thought into the initial statement. Once it was down and on the internet, he was stuck with what he said. Note to Twitter users: Posting shit late at night with no sleep is a bad idea. You are fucking impaired (as bad as being drunk really) when you do that. He does that sort of thing consistently.

From what I understand, when Trump feels threatened, he lashes out and attempts to intimidate whomever or whatever he feels threatened by in order to make it go away. In this case, it didn't work. So he doubled down until he couldn't anymore, then attempted to spin it into a win. Which is also typical Trump behavior.

Actually he had reason to lie. Him telling Trump that Trump was not under investigation was a terrible thing to do. And him having to admit that when it contradicts what he had leaked to the press - what he admits he had leaked to the press previously - makes him look bad. So yeah, plenty of reason to lie.

Never underestimate a Republican's ability to justify what another Republican does, even if he personally dislikes him.

Who's justifying? At best, threatening release of the tapes as petulant, childish, and pointless. At best. Noting the reality that even at worst it doesn't rise to intimidation of a witness isn't justification, it's just not buying into your desperate need for everything Trump does to be impeachable.

I can hate the man and still maintain enough rationality to not buy into fantasy. Apparently, you cannot, if, indeed, you ever could.

To be fair, I said he was an idiot because his tweet triggered a series of events that has put him in further scrutiny (and investigation) than if he had kept his trap shut. Misty is the one saying Trump was justified since apparently without it, Comey would have felt it was ok to lie or some bullshit.

Trump tried to tough-guy bluff and it blew up in his face worse than if he remained quiet. And yet their are people who think he should be given the god-damned medal of freedom for keeping Comey "honest".
