Netflix/Marvel: Iron Fist [I"m sure spoilers will be appearing soon]

    Thoughts?

I'm eight episodes in and finding it is not as bad as many of the reviews let on. It is definitely the weakest of the series, so far, in my opinion (and Iron Fist was my favorite of the four comics-wise). It suffers from a lack of compelling villain up to episode eight, no Kingpin/Cottonmouth/Purple Man quality acting/writing for the nominal villains so far (Madame Gao, various Meachums).

I'm enjoying Jessica Henwick's Colleen Wing a lot, and Rosario Dawson steals every scene she's in (as does Carrie Anne Moss).

Can definitely see the pieces moving into place for the Defenders. Should be interesting.

It was very by-the-numbers, which is where I think some of the complaints are valid. Having said that, it wasn't offensively bad, it just wasn't outstandingly good. Nothing about it screams, "MUST WATCH!" It's just sort-of... there, in the background, waiting for you to be bored enough to watch it.

I enjoyed it in the sense that it's a minor super-hero series and I like that kind of thing, but found nothing about it to be compelling viewing. I didn't really like Luke Cage all that much, but I still felt it had a certain impetus behind it that made it more of a must watch than Iron Fist. JJ still remains my favourite and I'm still pissed that JJ S2 isn't until 2018.

Haven't gotten around to watching it yet... Iron Fist was never my favorite part of Power-Man and Iron Fist.

In fact I always kinda felt the character was... a bit cliched even back then.

Fuck it. Guess I'm watching it now, nothing better to do and I'm too tired to read book 6 of the Expanse tonight.

Episode 1. Fucking hate the show opening. DD, JJ, and Luke Cage all had strong openers, this one? Not at all. No desire to ever see the opening credit sequence again.

Episode 2: Meh, the special effects for his "iron fist" aren't particularly special. Nor are the fight scenes. Did they blow their "awesome fight scenes" juju on DD and JJ?

Episode 3: How this version of Danny Rand was ever chosen to be the "Iron Fist" I have no idea. He's not the greatest martial artist at all, he's shit at noticing ninjas unfuckingsneaky businessmen sneaking around, he's petulant and has anger issues, etc. How could they expect him to defeat the Hand? Fuckin joke.

Epsiode 4: I like the first two "villians" presented. Nice pair of broken humans. Very relateable.

Episode 5: Seriously, these fight scenes, it's like there is no weight behind his punches.

It's wushu. Wushu is a sport, not a martial art. And even kung fu is very weak against actual opponents instead of standing blocks of wood. It's why nobody in MMA uses it.

They use wushu because it looks cool and that's it.

Episode 6 - The Total Mess. Seriously, a total mess.

I like the background plot with the Meachum's, but that was about it.

Oh and Colleen Wing is badass. Should'a made her Iron Fist.

Episode 7 - Best Episode so far. Barely any Danny Rand in it. Excellent.

It's not as bad as critics made it out to be. I enjoyed it. The story was pretty even throughout, not as up & down as the other series. Not as good as Daredevil S1 or the first half of S2 or Jessica Jones but definitely better than the second half of Luke Cage.

    Done with 11.

Danny seems portrayed as having the emotional maturity of a 10 year old. I had hoped it would be intentional, but it doesn't seem so.

I think the fight scenes would have been better if they had had a few more with Danny simply mopping the floor with people. He seems too vulnerable, and it's not just his skill, it's the portrayal.

Wellllllll this show is now on my back burner of shows to watch. I"ll finish other shows before diving into this Hot Mess.

How does this rank on the list of Netflix shows? Below Luke Cage?

I'm 4 episodes in so far. I'm enjoying it as far as it goes. I'm not in a huge rush to get through the series, unlike DD or JJ. It's a much slower burn so far, and Danny's villains aren't nearly as compelling Fisk or Purple Man. Danny also doesn't have nearly the same strong personal connections to the city and environment that the other characters enjoyed, so it makes the stakes seem much smaller.
