I was going to write a big diatribe in rebuttal, but... you're right. It was an unfair comparison. Colonialization was an order of magnitude more malignant.

That doesn't change that you are incorrect in laying Detroit's fall solely at the feet of automation, though. NAFTA played a huge role in that, as the new factories created to house all those robots were built in the border towns of Mexico (a loss of jobs - and more importantly taxable revenue - in Detroit), and the replacement jobs that were created to build the robots are mostly located overseas. So Detroit took two body blows - they lost the union jobs that artificially created the blue collar middle class, and they lost the technical jobs related to the mechanical replacement workers as well.

Worse, the end is not yet in sight, as automotive supply chain industries continue to game plan for the biggest manufacturers long-held desire for local suppliers. Detroit's already lost big chunks of that business (like Delphi, which now has a larger amount of workers and plants in Mexico than it does in the US), and will lose more before we're done.

Does automation play a part? Yes. Is it the whole reason? Not hardly. NAFTA (and to a lesser extent the fact that the replacement robots are manufactured overseas) plays a very big role.

Well no, that's bullshit. Automation had already happened to that industry before NAFTA. A huge number of auto manufacturing jobs did shift to Mexico. There is no denying that, unless you're using alternative facts? The 2016 study by the Center for Automotive Research shows automakers including BMW, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan and Volkswagen have announced Mexican investment plans worth more than $24 billion. Nine of the last 10 auto assembly plants announced for the NAFTA region are being built or have been built in Mexico.

I mean, estimates put a job loss of around 845,000 jobs due to NAFTA. Let's not pretend none of that happened, shall we?

job freeze at work. in those who were offered jobs can't have them. which happened under reagan too.

if you didn't start prior to jan 21. you don't have a valid job offer going forward.

It's not like the CDC's work is important...

Meh. There is a loophole in the decree Trump signed. Any job deemed "necessary to meet natsec or public safety responsibilities" can be filled.

More Trump lies to satisfy his useful idiots.

    That's why they invented contractors...

There are swings both ways. In my industry, its swayed towards gov't now. Used to be we'd steal away employees from them with better pay/benefits. Now, they're doing to us.

Same thing happens at any large private organization during leadership changes (the moment the a new CFO comes in and starts vetting costs, for example). The key word there is "large."

Don't worry, all that money they say will be saved will be quickly on overtime to over worked employees and expensive contractors.
Trump is just Putin's little bitch.
