Thread: What should I do?

  1. #16
True, that. A lot of RPGs mention D&D in passing. Particularly in the editorial content.

As long as they don't mention it on the cover "in passing".

On the "referring to D&D" note - it's pretty much a non-issue. He's not using a license (such as the d20 STL/OGL combo) which forbids it, so I'd really not address it. That's an issue between publishers, and I think you'll find that he's OK on that front, as long as he's not capitalising on the D&D brand name (i.e. hasn't stuck it on the cover, for example).

Well, I agree that it's probably a non-issue, but (and I'm assuming you know more about U.S. Law than you probably should, since you're from across the pond), but every thing I ever see that references another companies product will always have the legal disclaimer:

"Dungeons and Dragons is a registered trademark of Wizards of the Coast, Incorporated" or something like that.

Maybe it is just a legal disclaimer, and only there to cover their ass legally for some reason, and isn't technically necessary? I don't know. I don't know much about that area of the law.

I've always tried to review things with the mindset that I am the Potential Players advocate, not the Publisher's.

I say just go with what you actually think about he product. No need to be cruel (unless it is unconscianably bad), but the point of the review is to give the reader some pertinent info that will affect their purchasing decision.

That makes a lot of sense. That explains why you are still reviewing and I am not.

Oh come on now. Like you loved it when someone told y o u how to write a book. What's up with you.

------ back to the thread at hand>>>

All things aside, however - this business can sometimes give the illusion of being a large circle of friends. Everything seems a bit too comfy. When the plain and simple fact is, if you start a company, even if you're the only employee, you need to be bringing certain skills to the marketplace. If you don't, you'll fail.

Unless this man's your close friend, you have to do your job and review his product. If you choose to go that extra mile and warn him beforehand, you wouldn't be alone - the rpg/pdf business is filled with kindly gestures. Just know that you wouldn't be wrong if you just did your job.

I know, hence my poking you. In Nut Test Land. The only place us pdf folk can be retarded without giving a worry to dropping sales.

Rep++ for being a "players' advocate". This guy needs to know that he is a long way from being a decent game designer.

Nothing wrong with that review at all. I think you did fine.

Nice to see you followed through.

After having people piss and moan over a *4* (amidst crying crocodile tears about "how much damage I am doing to his company), hissy fits are not only not likely to sway me these days, they are sure to make me dig in my heels.
